The head of the UK’s internal security service MI5, Jonathan Evans, increasingly acts more like a self serving publicist for the government of the day than the UK’s top internal Spook. He recently gave a ‘State of the Nation’ type address before the worlds media, which was reminiscent of the WMD document the head of the Security and Intelligence Service [SIS] had so pliably produced on behalf of Tony Blair’s government to justify the invasion of Saddam’s Iraq. Had Evans not be born with a silver spoon in his mouth, if his latest media address is anything to go by, he could have had a lucrative career as muscle for a debt collecting agency, he puts the frighteners on people so well.
Read this drivel and weep for it was clearly designed to impel a fear and loathing of islam into the hearts of the British people, take this.
“As a country, we are rightly concerned to protect children from exploitation in other areas. We need to do the same in relation to violent extremism. As I speak, terrorists are methodically and intentionally targeting young people and children in this country. They are radicalizing, indoctrinating and grooming young, vulnerable people to carry out acts of terrorism. This year, we have seen individuals as young as 15 and 16 implicated in terrorist-related activity.” No names no pack drill, just a broad sweep of allegations so reminiscent of the days of the Bush-Blair pairing.
And how about this for blind arrogance, “For instance, there is no doubt now that al Qaeda in Iraq aspires to promote terrorist attacks outside Iraq.” Not a mention that al-Qaeda in Iraq did not exist before Evans, his colleagues and political friends conjured them up to poison the well in the lead in to the occupation of Iraq. If Evans career as a spook ever fails he might tread the boards for the following line from his speech is pure satire, “It is fairly unusual for the head of MI5 to speak at a media-focused event. But the issue of trust is highly relevant to the world of intelligence”
It is quite clear from Jonathan Evans latest media missive that the British security services have not learnt a jot from the WMD fiasco. They are still behaving as a pliable puppet of the political powers, both at home and in the USA. Instead of acting as an independent conduit that provides the government of the day with honest information, whether favorable or not to its overall strategy. Of course the security services and police have a duty to protect the public from Terrorist attack, however it is high time the politicos were reminded the job of politicians is to protect the people from draconian laws and excessive police powers that curtail our hard won civil liberties. Not act in tandem with the security services in taking our civil liberties away.
Some may feel it is all very democratic for the head of MI5 to answer questions from a tame media-pack, in reality the opposite is true, for what the situation demands is public-parliamentary oversight of the security service. The fact that no such mechanism exists at a time when the security services are being expanded rapidly and are being given a freer reign is very worrying. For example in the north of Ireland, unfortunately still part of the UK, MI5 has become the sole state authority when it comes to dealing with terrorism, whereas in the past this work was done jointly by the police and security forces. Nula O’Loan who is about to retire as Police Ombudswoman in the north and who has brought into the public arena a number of cases where the police and security forces colluded in criminality with loyalist para-militaries, recently announced that she has been unable to reach an agreement with MI5 which would enable her successor to continue to investigate such crimes that involved those State agencies that are dealing with terrorist crimes. What this amounts to is that MI5 and its sister MI6 are now a law unto themselves.
